What Are Anti-wrinkle Injections?

Antiwrinkle injections are used to prevent muscle movement, which helps to stop the creasing of skin which causes lines and wrinkles. The substance used for this is botulinum toxin (Botox). It is a neurotoxic protein produced by bacteria. It works by blocking the signals from nerves to muscles preventing muscle movement. These signals will return to normal function as the treatment wears off.

Anti-wrinkle injections are classed as a prescription-only medication, this means that you must be seen by a medical practitioner that holds a prescribing qualification. This can be an independent nurse prescriber, doctor, or dentist. Any other practitioners must have a prescribing professional present to ensure the suitability of the medication for the patient.

In the skin clinic, we only use premium brands that are licenced for the UK. In all, there are 3 brands available that we believe to be suitable for our patients, with the clinical evidence of efficacy and safety. In this clinic typically we use the brand BOTOX®. However, some patients may be more suited to another brand. Nurse Dawn has the experience to ensure patients receive the correct treatment to deliver positive results.

How Long Do Anti-wrinkle Treatments Last?

How often a patient will require the treatment depends on the severity of the lines the patient is concerned about, and the strength of the muscles in the surrounding area. This can vary from regular treatments every 3 months, to treatments 1-2 times per year. With continued treatment muscles in the affected area weaken increasing the longevity of the treatment. However, there are some individuals who can develop a resistance to products over time.

A patient’s lifestyle can play a role in how quickly the treatment wears off. Sunbed users and physically fit individuals can sometimes metabolise the product quicker and therefore require more regular treatment.

What Is The Difference Between Dermal Fillers And Antiwrinkle Injections?

  • Dermal Fillers fill and add volume to tissues/bone whereas antiwrinkle injections work on the muscle alone.

  • Dermal Fillers will last 6+ months, whereas anti-wrinkle injections will last 3 months.

  • Dermal Fillers get instant results, antiwrinkle injections take 2 weeks for the results.

  • Dermal Fillers are reversible, whereas antiwrinkle injections must run their course and be metabolised.

  • Dermal Fillers are classed as a medical device, whereas anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only medication.
